Removal of material
This is the first step and is referred to as subtractive manufacturing as the parts that are not needed from the material are cut off. This initial stage involves cutting of the raw sheet metal through a laser to achieve the desired shape and size.
Reshaping the material
In many cases, a 3D part is desired. This is achieved at this stage where the part cut from the first stage is reshaped or deformed through bending and forming. Again, these processes are also machine-controlled so that it is done with high precision required.
Assembling
This is common for 3D parts where it is not obviously possible to fabricate as a whole. Different components that were fabricated differently are now joined together to form the needed complete shape. This can be one through welding, hardware insertion, and any other appropriate method.
